The Cynthia Corbett Gallery has the great pleasure of presenting The Young Masters at The Affordable Art Fair, Battersea 2016

An Homage to Literature

This year’s presentation at the Affordable Art Fair curated by the Young Masters is a focus on a tendency within contemporary photography to reflect and draw upon literary figures and narratives. We are pleased to exhibit some of the most talented and promising artists in the field today, including American photographer Elisabeth Caren, with reimagined portraits of classical literary characters, Isabelle van Zeijl with her series of ‘self-portraits’ inspired by the Dutch Old Master and Irish artist Gillian Hyland, whose works always seem to suggest a larger narrative.

Matt Smith: Found Objects

We will be presenting a special focus on our first winner of the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramic Prize 2014, Matt Smith, who is currently completing a residency at the Ceramic Studio at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.  Matt Smith is interested in history as a constantly selected and refined narrative that edits out marginalised histories and presents itself as a fixed and accurate account of the past. In Smith’s sculptural pieces, familiar objects and elements are re-appropriated and made unfamiliar. Smith’s pieces also utilise mainstream culture, taking objects from their intended role and repurposing them in new situations – creating a visual polarity.
